How the Strike Works

Step 1: Pledge to strike.

When you press the “strike!” button and fill out the commitment form, you join a community dedicated to striking down coal and building up justice.

Step 2: Don’t pay your electric bill.

By collectively removing our money, we as ratepayers build power behind our demands. We can’t say exactly how long the strike will take, but from September 1 onwards, we’ll all stop paying our electric bills.

Step 3: Mail a letter — and some coal! — to your utility.

To make sure your utility knows the reason your payment didn’t come in, you’ll need to mail a letter about the strike. We’ll send you a toolkit with everything you need — including a little bit of coal from Merrimack Station to include in the envelope as a tangible reminder.

Step 4:

Redistribute funds, if you’re able.

We’re not waiting to build up justice. While we’re on strike, we’re lifting up organizations across New England to redirect the money that would have gone to our utility bills to the people who need it most, spotlighting those working for Black and Indigenous liberation and helping people through the COVID economic collapse. If you can afford to, join us in redistributing your electric payment — for a more equitable world both today and tomorrow.

Step 5:

Tell your friends!

The more people we bring onboard, the stronger we are. One of the best ways to grow our community is for each of us to reach out to people that we know, explain why we’re moved to strike, and personally ask them to join us. We’ll make sure you’re ready to talk to your friends about striking, ready to take the social media #CoalBucketChallenge — or plug in however you fit best!
